Timeline of Neighbors' Suffering from State Line CAFO Emissions
January - August, 2006

These are ONLY the days that hog stench was so bad neighbors called DEQ to investigate. Many other days not listed, DEQ was not called, even though emissions were present or variable, more or less intense, depending on winds. State Line, Morenci, MI, received its Second Letter of Violation (Aug 1, 2006) from DEQ, for numerous days of air violations, Dec 2005- Aug 2006.  Still no fines for violations.

Jan 3 - DEQ cites State Line for Violation of air quality law (listed in 2nd Letter of Violation - Aug 1, 2006)
Jan 11 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "strong odors coming from the State Line facility at 1 a.m."
Jan 16 - DEQ cites Violation, reports "very strong and objectionable" odors; concerns that biofilters aren't working. A neighbor reported strong odors from the hog facility, "very bad at 8:15 in the morning."
Jan 17 - "strong swine odor"

Feb 16 - DEQ cites Violation, reports "distinct and definite hog odor."
Feb 21 - DEQ reports "distinct and definite hog odor"
Feb 24 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported the hog facility "smelled bad and the wind was blowing the odor toward her home."

March 23 - hog stench
March 28 - DEQ cites Violation.

April 6 -DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported the hog facility "smells bad." Visitors from the Historic Prservation Society "also found the odors from the State Line Farms objectionable."
April 16 (Easter Sunday) - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "odors were very bad and a visitor also commented on the strong odors."

April 18 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "odors were bad."
April 19 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighor reported "stinking hog odors" to DEQ. The wind was blowing and the neighbor "expects the odors will get worse as the temperature increases through the day." DEQ found "odors strong although intermittent with the breeze."
April 20 - DEQ cites Violation, reports "definite and distinct" odors. 3 neighbors called DEQ with concerns about air pollution. One said "the odors from the State Line Farm hog facility are overwhelming..she has to retreat into house" to escape the odors. "She can't open her windows during the summer because of the odors. Her farm house is over one hundred years old and she can't believe that this new hog facility is driving her out."Another reported "bad hog odors." Another neighbor reported that "the hog odors are very strong...terrible hog manure smell since the morning."
April 28 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reports "hog odors were very bad."
April 29 - DEQ cites Violation, reports "definite and distinct swine odor from the barns...due to the intensity I would find the odors objectionable if exposed to them for a prolonged period."
April 30 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reports "strong pig odors." DEQ reported "definite and distinct hog odors...the odors remained strong while I interviewed [neighbors]."

May 1 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "the hogs are stinking again today." DEQ found "strong, distinct and definite swine odor while parked in front of Mr.___'s house." DEQ met with Gary Gallup, State Line owner, "to inform him I had received three complaints on each of the last three days...Mr. Gallup asked if I found the odors today objectionable, to which I replied if I had to smell them all day long I would call them objectionable. To that Mr. Gallup replied "Bull shit!" At that point I departed the facility."
May 2 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "odors were very bad from the hog facility."
May 8 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "hogs smelling pretty good today!"  Another neighbor also called DEQ about "odors from the hogs."
May 10 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "terrible hog odors from the Gallup barns [State Line]."
May 16 - "strong, distinct and definite swine odor"

June 2 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported that "the hog facility stinks horribly today." Another reported he "first noticed the odors while he was eating breakfast. He said the odors were strong enough to cause him not to want to finish his breakfast. He said the odors seemed to diminish and then were strong again around noon."
June 10 - DEQ cites Violation
June 24 - DEQ cites Violation, reports "The odor was sporadic as the winds would shift...When the winds were directly out of the east I could smell the hog odor. [State Line Farms] were also haying at the same time between the barns and the road and I could smell the odors over the smell of the freshly cut hay."
June 26 - intense stench
June 27 - DEQ finds "strong, definite and distinct hog/hog manure odor"
June 28 - DEQ reported "a strong, definite and distinct swin related odor" on Ridgeville Rd.

July 7 - Neighbor describes how he started feeling ill and by Saturday night [July 8] he broke out into a cold sweat and felt like he was going to pass out. He went to the doctor on Monday and by Tuesday/Wednesday he was starting to feel better. Then  he said he started smelling the hogs the last couple of days and started feeling bad again.
July 11 - DEQ reports "strong hog manure odor...very strong"
July 12 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor called DEQ to report "foul odor in the air from farm animals."
July 13 - DEQ cites Violation. "The hogs were stinking again" at State Line, one neighbor reported. DEQ staffer and his wife responded to the complaint: "We sat in our car, with the windows down approximately sixty feet west of the intersection [Ridgeville and M-156] for several minutes. The odors would come and go with the wind, but were detectable more than they were not. I noted that the odors were strong, distinct and definite, a '2' on the odors scale. As we sat there for several  more minutes my wife commented that, 'You couldn't sit outside for very long with that smell!'" Later in the evening, DEQ Hotline noted another call from a neighbor: "The hog smell is heavy and sickening, making her sick to her stomach."
July 14 - DEQ cites Violation. Neighbor reported "The hog smell was so bad it was making him dizzy." He had walked out to his barn in the morning and "didn't think he would be able to make it back to his house. He said the odors from the hog barns were making him dizzy and nauseous." Another neighbor left a message with DEQ saying "he was not feeling well due to the odor from the hogs." DEQ staffer noted: "The odors were nearly continuous while I was standing in Mr. ___'s yard. After several minutes, I began to notice as the odors intensified I began to feel a little nauseous. I departed the area..." 
July 18 - DEQ cites Violation, "the odors were very strong." Neighbor reported "the odors got real bad when they sat down to eat their supper.  Mr. ___ said his wife has been suffering from headaches for the last several days" because of hog odors. Another neighbor told DEQ the stench was a "little gamey." His wife reported "there were days when she would have to close the windows in her house to keep the odors out. She also reported there have been worse days than this one."
July 19 - DEQ cites Violation
July 24 - DEQ reported "strong, definite and distinct swine odors as we approached the State Line Farms' barns."
July 28 - "strong definite and distinct swine odors"

Aug 5 - Neighbor called DEQ Hotline to report "hogs are smelling again."
Aug 8 - Neighbor reported "the Gallup hogs were stinking." DEQ finds "definite and distinctive swine odors" on M-156 at new barns, also "a distinct and definite odor coming from the older barns" further south.
Aug 9 - Neighbor called DEQ to report "the hogs at State Line Farms are stinking again. He said the odor has been worse, but today it had more of a chemical smell to it."
Aug 12 - Neighor reported the odors were "just awful this morning." DEQ finds "definite and distinct swine odors with the breeze."
