Senator Warren: URGENT EPA request – Declare Lake Erie “Impaired”

State Senator Rebekah Warren (18th, District, Michigan, Democratic Vice Chair of the Senate Natural Resources Committee) has requested the Environmental Protection Agency take urgent action to mitigate algal blooms in Lake Erie by designating the Western Lake Erie Basin “Impaired”. (2/24/2016 Letter below).

This action follows similar appeals in October, 2015 from conservation groups including the Alliance for the Great Lakes, the Lake Erie Charter Boat Association, the Lake Erie Waterkeeper, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Ohio Environmental Council. These groups are concerned about the EPA’s failure to take action despite re-occurrence of harmful algal blooms that have poisoned drinking water, closed beaches and damaged fishing and other recreational activities. (Cleveland Plain Dealer, 10/22/15)

If the EPA agrees to the request, Lake Erie’s western basin becomes eligible for restoration and protection under the Clean Water Act.
